What we believe
- We do what works. Most of the time that means questions and conversation. When an explanation isn’t sticking, we switch to practice and repetition. A method is only as good as what the student can do afterward.
- Each student is an individual. There is no fixed curriculum. We find out who the student is, what they care about and what they need, and we build from there.
- Understanding and results go together. Real understanding makes results last, and it’s what helps us solve the hardest problems and overcome the biggest obstacles.
- Every lesson leaves students more capable. The challenge is dynamic, and each student discovers what they can do.
- We’re honest with students and families, including when the news is tough.
How we teach
- The student does the thinking. We ask before we tell, and students explain ideas in their own words.
- Teach it back. After a unit, the student teaches it to us.
- We wait after a mistake. Most students catch it themselves, and a self-caught error sticks.
- There’s a way in for every student, whether that’s a basic question, one complex problem, or something they already care about.
- The challenge is calibrated. Hard enough to matter, close enough to reach, and beyond the test once the basics are solid.
- Basics until they’re automatic. Shaky fundamentals hold everything else back, so we fix them first.
A typical session
- Start with the student’s own work.
- Teach from the mistakes that matter most.
- Practice.
- End on a real success.
Over time
- No cold diagnostic test. The first session is live, and it adjusts to the student as we go.
- Test prep moves from closing gaps, to near-flawless practice tests, to problems beyond the test.
- School subjects aim for success in the student’s own class, working alongside their teacher.
- Essays sharpen the student’s voice and never replace it.
- Mentorship can be regular or on demand, and it grows with the student.
For families
- A report after every session.
- Honest updates, including the difficult ones.
- Homework that fits the student’s goals and school workload.
